If you love the look of wood flooring but don’t have the budget to achieve a timber floor then Laminate flooring is probably your perfect option. With all the detail and authenticity of a timber floor look, laminate has become a popular alternative.
Laminate flooring is relatively new to the market but has taken the world of floor coverings by storm. Versatile, hard wearing, easy to maintain, and reasonably priced it’s become an interior hero.
What Is Laminate Flooring?
Laminate comprises four layers of materials fused together using heat, pressure, and adhesive, in a process known as lamination. While laminates are often manufactured to replicate the look of a variety of hardwood surfaces, they actually contain no wood materials. Rather, they are constructed from resins and fibreboard particles.
The four layers are as follows:
• Wear layer – A clear, top layer that provides exceptional resistance to wear, fading and staining.
• Design layer – A high resolution printed paper layer that realistically captures the look of the surface it is imitating. Generally the designs are of timber but they may also be of tile or stone.
• Inner core – A layer of High Density Fibreboard (HDF). HDF is a pressed wood product that is extremely dense, providing stability for the finished board.
• Backing Layer – A melamine layer providing further stability and also a moisture barrier.
Laminate flooring’s wear layer is so durable that it makes Laminate the hardest of all flooring products. Timber, Bamboo and Vinyl flooring will dent in situations where Laminate flooring does not. Laminate flooring is also fade resistant which means it works well in rooms where sun exposure is a factor. Some laminate products in particular the Quickstep Impressive range are warrantied for wet areas too providing a great option for a continued design theme throughout your home.
